CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
AND APPEAL PROCESSES FOR THE CERTIFIED
ATHLETIC EQUIPMENT MANAGER


Units of continuing education shall be approved by the continuing education committee of the Athletic Equipment Managers’ Association, Inc.  Where it is applicable, the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) will be adopted as the unit of measurement to meet the continuing education requirements of the certified athletic equipment manager of AEMA.  The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is defined as “ten (10) contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction, and qualified instruction”.  [Ten (10) contact hours = one (1.0) CEU; One contact hour = .1 CEU].

To maintain certification the minimum number of units to be accumulated each three-year (3.0) continuing education period shall be (6.0) CEUs.  [Those certified within the 3-year period shall have their CEU requirements prorated for that period only (total CEU points needed will be from the next June 1, after you are certified until the end of the current report period).]  The CEU report periods are June 1, 2009 through May 31, 2012, June 1, 2012 through May 31 2015, etc.

The certified athletic equipment manager is responsible for sending to their district continuing education committee representative proof of completion of any CEUs and activities to be used in updating his/her record in a required period of thirty days (30) after completing the activity.  See attached list for your district’s continuing education committee representative, they are your contact in continuing education.  

The certified athletic equipment manager who does not accumulate the recorded number of six (6) CEUs during the designated 3-year period shall have his/her name turned over to the membership and certification for appropriate action.  Any action taken affecting status of a certified athletic equipment manager relating to continuing education may be appealed to the continuing education committee (please refer to the appeal process section.) In order to maintain certification, a certified member may opt to take and pass the certification exam within the last year of the window.

Certified athletic equipment managers serving as members of the armed forces may request (in writing) a waiver of CEUs during their tour of active duty.  The request will be granted at the discretion of the continuing education committee.

A certified equipment manager must be in good standing in order to be awarded CEUs.  Activities that occur during a period in which a member is not in good standing will not be awarded.  

The continuing education committee has developed the following definitions of acceptable continuing education for certified athletic equipment managers:

A.    AEMA Annual Convention:  One and one half (1.5) CEUs for registration and attendance of each annual convention.  Must pick up badge at or before the last registration period.  

B.    Workshops offered at AEMA Annual Convention:  One tenth (0.1) CEUs for every one (1.0) contact hours of workshop (1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU.)

C.    AEMA non-convention district meetings:  One tenth (0.1) CEU for every one (1.0) contact hours will be awarded for the workshop program offered at district meeting.  (1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU).  Maximum number of two (2.0) CEUs per year.  

D.    AEMA approved short-term courses and meetings:  Clinics, workshops, seminars or AEMA approved courses, etc., endorsed by the continuing education committee.  One tenth (0.1) CEU will be awarded for every one (1.0) contact hour (1 contact hour = 0.1 CEU.) Maximum number of two (2.0) CEUs earned per year.  NFL = 1.5, NHL = 1.0 plus one tenth (0.1) contact hour, CoachComm = .8.  All other national bodies one tenth (0.1) per contact hour.

1.     Certified equipment manager organizing/hosting an equipment management workshop shall be awarded twice the contact point value of the activity.  

2.    Manufacturer’s tours (i.e. Schutt, Riddell, Adams, etc….) will be awarded one tenth (0.1) CEU’s per one contact hour of “educational time” spent, with a maximum of five tenths (0.5) CEU’s.  There will be a cap of one visit, per manufacturer, per window that can be submitted.  The member will need to provide itinerary with actual times listed for educational tours and talks, along with a completed CEU report form.

3.    Other Clinic, workshops and meetings related to equipment management or professional development will be awarded one tenth ( 0.1) ceu per contact hour.  Conference meetings will fall into this category.  All meetings taking place outside of convention should be reported by the individual using the ceu report form.


E.    Publication of original work:  Publication of original work in a state, regional or national journal will be awarded one (1.0) CEU per paper.  Copy of paper must be included with request form.  

F.    Program participation at state, district, or national meetings:  Credit units will be awarded for an original presentation at any recognized association of one (1.0) CEU per presentation. Maximum of two (2.0) CEU units per year.

G.    Promotion of athletic equipment management to other groups:  


1.    The presentation of athletic equipment management to non-related organizations and civic groups will be awarded five tenths (0.5) CEU per meeting. This also  includes participation in workshops/seminars/symposiums as a speaker. Maximum of two (2.0) CEU units per year.  A written summary or outline of the presentation must be included.

2.    Two tenths (0.2) CEU per hour taught will be awarded as a guest lecturer in a health/physical education/recreation or other academic class that is not part of your job description, not to exceed two (2.0) CEU per year.  

3.    Repeating a presentation of a previously given presentation will be  awarded (0.2) CEU.

4.    Assisting other organizations with fitting of athletic equipment will be awarded 0.1 ceu per contact hour with a max of 0.5 ceu per organization with a maximum of 2.0 ceu per year.

H.    Teaching of athletic equipment management courses:  One (1.0) CEU will be awarded for each credit hour of actual teaching, not to exceed two (2.0) per year, must provide course syllabus.  

I.    Student Supervision:  (Inclusive of high school managers and pro team managers).  Five tenths (0.5) CEU per year will be awarded for supervision of a student.  If more than one certified athletic equipment manager is supervising the individual, each receives equal credit.  General manager, athletic director, or principal must sign CEU report noting that adequate educational supervision was provided to student managers.  A list of all managers supervised must accompany report.  Report must be turned in by June 30 of each year to get CEU points for that year.

J.    Continuing Education Course:  This is for a college course and other courses of this nature.  The study must be related to improving one’s equipment management skills and/or knowledge.  There will be one half (0.5) CEUs awarded per each credit hour accepted, with a limit of two (2.0) CEUs per year to be accompanied by a copy of the transcripts and course description and course syllabus.  Grade of C or higher must be earned.

K.    AEMA activities:

1.    Serving as a national officer or district director in AEMA will be awarded one (1.0) CEU per year.  District officers will be awarded one tenth (0.1) CEU per year.

2.    Committee membership in AEMA at the national level will be awarded one (1.0) CEU per year and district level committee membership will be awarded one tenth (0.1) CEU per year.  An additional five tenths (0.5) CEU each year will be awarded for the chairmanship of the committee at the national level and one tenth (0.1) CEU per year at the district level.  District newsletter editor will be awarded five tenths (0.5) CEU per year.

3.    Official liaison activity.  Those members participating the capacity of a liaison for the AEMA will be awarded one (1.0) CEU each year.

4.    Committee approval work with a national/Olympic team or site must have Committee’s pre-approval and will be awarded five tenths (0.5) CEU per year.  A report of the work provided along with a copy of the acceptance letter must be submitted before final credit is awarded.

L.    Resource Center:  DVD’s and articles from the AEMA resource center are awarded one tenth (0.1) CEU per item once the enclosed questionnaire is submitted to the Resource center.  No credit is given for purchase of the journal (Journals will be awarded five tenths (0.5) upon satisfactory completion of the journal test under category O.) All items checked out from the resource center are credited only to the person checking out these items.  Credit for any item is given on a one-time basis only.  Maximum of two (2.0) CEU units per window

M.    Special projects and considerations:  All projects and educational activities other than CPR must be submitted to the continuing education committee for consideration.  CEU’s will be awarded by the committee at the next Continuing Education Committee meeting and will be awarded for the window in which the activity occurred.  These include but are not limited to:

1.     Projects such as development of, or participation in films, radio conferences, television programs or other audio-visual aids that may be used as a teaching aid or for public relations in the field of athletic equipment management will be five tenths (0.5) CEU per project.  Summary of the project including a copy of the program must be included with the request.

2.    Preparation and presentation of athletic equipment exhibits at local, district, or national level:  Limit five tenths (0.5) CEU per exhibit.

3.    Current CPR and/or first aid is creditable for five tenths (0.5) CEU per renewable year.  Copy of the card should be submitted with the Request form.

4.    Membership and participation in AEMA Continuing Education Committee approved outside organizations is creditable for one tenth (0.1) CEU per year.

5.    Original Essay: A written documentation, which summarizes how time was spent at the National Convention, and what items of value to your profession were experienced.  Original document should be given to the administrator, along with a copy that he/she signs as a receipt.  The signed/dated copy along with a completed CEU report form should then be forwarded to your CEU district representative, thirty days after convention.  A maximum of five tenths (0.5) CEU’s can be earned per year, CEC will determine points based on content of essay submitted.  Points will be awarded at the time of the following convention year and applied to the individual’s record.  CEU district representative will verify workshops that equipment manager attended.  

6.    Touring other facilities, while not participating against the host, will be awarded (0 .1) CEU per visit with a (0 .5) CEU maximum per window. A written summary of the tour and contact information for the host must be provided with CEU Report Form.

N.    Sporting goods shows:  Registration and attendance at sporting goods shows will be awarded points on the following scale: 1 to 10 vendors = one tenth (0.1); 11 to 25 vendors = two tenths (0.2); 26 to 50 vendors = three tenths (0.3); and 51 or more vendors = five tenths (0.5).  CEU report form must note the contact and phone number for the show and be accompanied by your registration receipt or nametag and the vendors list.

O.    AEMA Journal:  The test in the AEMA journal will be worth five tenths (0.5) CEU if certified member completely takes the test, scores 70% or higher, and the test is returned to their district continuing education committee member for grading.  A maximum of two (2.0) CEUs per reporting window may be earned by taking the AEMA journal test.

Appeal Process

The certified Athletic Equipment Manager will receive an annual statement showing the number of CEUs accumulated.  CEUs earned in excess of requirements for the current period cannot be credited to the next recording period.

A Certified Athletic Equipment Manager who fails to accumulate sufficient CEUs during a report window will be mailed a notice, to their last known address, that they do not have enough CEUs to remain certified.  If they wish to remain certified they have 30 days after mailing date of this notice to appeal this status.  APPEAL MUST BE IN WRITING AND MUST PROVIDE EVIDENCE TO SUBSTANTIATE THE APPEAL.  The appeal will be sent to the following address:
